The pandemic crisis may have forced the Canadian economy to come to a standstill and evaporated millions of jobs overnight, but it also brought a silver lining for a handful. A recent survey by Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives claimed the top 20 wealthiest citizens of Canada added an astonishing $37 billion between March to September. While the nation’s economy sunk to depths not seen since the Great Depression of the 1930s, the rich got richer.
* At the fifth spot is HUANG CHULONG with a net worth of $5.1 billion. This real-estate mogul is a self-made billionaire. Chulong holds Canadian citizenship but lives in China. He is the chairman of the Galaxy Group, a private real estate developer based in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen.
* DAVID THOMSON and family, owners of media behemoth Thomson Corporation, hold the uno spot with a net worth of $31.6 billion. Between March to September this year, the family’s wealth swelled by $8.8 billion. The family inherited the media and publishing empire that was founded by Roy Thomson. They also have stakes in telecom giant Bell Canada and Globe and Mail newspaper.
