Description
Caribbean Utilities Company Ltd, based in the Cayman Island, is an electricity company with a diversified portfolio of energy generation assets.
The company commenced its operations in Grand Cayman, the largest island of all three Cayman Islands, as the only public electric utility company on May 10, 1966.
As of 2021, the company’s installed generating capacity is 161 megawatts. It reportedly serves over 30,000 customers.
Caribbean Utilities Company claims to be a sector-leader electricity supplier and an efficient power company in the region of 50 years.
The group of islands is Great Britain’s overseas territory, which is made of three sub-islands: Little Cayman, Cayman Brac and Grand Cayman.
The Grand Cayman Islands is situated approximately 150 miles south of Cuba and 460 miles south of Miami. Christopher Columbus discovered these islands in 1503. The group of islands was originally named as ‘Las Tortugas.'
Caribbean Utilities Company relies upon diesel generation for electricity production in Grand Cayman. The company says that islands do not have hydroelectric potential or inherent thermal resources; thus, it relies on the imported diesel fuel from refineries in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean.
The imported fuel is transferred to the company’s centralized power generating plant on the outskirts of George Town from the suppliers' tanker terminals.
In 2017, the first commercial five megawatts solar project in Grand Cayman was commissioned and completed. The facility, connected to Bodden town substation, reportedly provides solar power to approximately 800 homes.
Caribbean Utilities Company’s power generation portfolio comprises 20 generation units with two gas turbines, 17 diesel engines, and a steam turbine.
The facilities have a total capacity of 161 megawatts.
Caribbean Utilities Company also owns four mobile units with a capacity of 1.5 megawatts. The system consists of eight major transformer substations, 53.8 miles of underground transmission and distribution lines and about 387 miles of overhead high-voltage lines.
In Grand Cayman, the company also owns 14 miles of high-voltage submarine cable. The transmission and distribution lines and substations are designed to survive high winds and floods resulting from hurricanes, the company claims.
The utility company owns multiple transformer substations, office buildings, warehouses, fuel tanks, and hurricane centers.
The company posts financial records and investor-related documents on the official website.
