Description
Orocobre Limited produces, explores and develops mining projects to extract global lithium carbonate and boron minerals.
The firm acquired a Canadian resource firm, Advantage Lithium Corp, on February 19, 2020.
Orocobre Limited also has partnership agreements with JEMSE and Toyota Tsusho Corp (TTC) to build and develop the first commercial, brine-based lithium operation in the world reportedly.
The company is also engaged in several exploration and development projects with global operations, including the construction of a lithium hydroxide plant in Japan.
The mining firm is engaged in the exploration and development of lithium properties in British Columbia. Orocobre and Advantage were reportedly associated since 2016, when Orocobre purchased several shares of Advantage Lithium in exchange for its lithium brine exploration projects. Before purchasing all Advantage shares, the mining firm held a 34.7 per cent stake in Advantage Lithium Corp’s issued capital and the two exploration companies were jointly responsible for the exploration and development of the Cauchari project, located south of the Olaroz Lithium facility.
Earlier, Orocobre had a 25 per cent stake in the project and now wholly owns as a result of acquisition of Advantage Lithium Corp.
The firm’s portfolio, through Advantage Lithium Corp, now consists of the following:
• Cauchari in Jujuy: Covers an area of 277,771 hectare and the majority stake is held by Advantage Lithium.
• Incahuasi and Antofalla Property in Salta: Incahuasi is a wholly owned 9,843-hectare property. In addition, the lithium-focused firm also holds 100 per cent stake in the Antofalla project, located in Salta. It is covered in an area of 10,653 hectares of land reportedly.
• Guayatoyoc in Jujuy: Guayatoyoc with 21,276 hectares of area is completely owned by Advantage Lithium Corp.
Apart from properties acquired from Advantage Lithium, the company’s portfolio consists of two significant operations, namely Borax Argentina and Olaroz Lithium Facility.
Olaroz Lithium Facility, located in Argentina’s Jujuy province is the firm’s flagship project and produces brine-based global lithium carbonate. The first sale from this facility occurred in April 2015, the mining firm claims.
Borax Argentina Mine was acquired by Orocobre in August 2012 from Rio Tinto Plc. The mine hosts boron minerals and consists of two open pit mines, with significant land holdings, concentrators, and refining capacity.
On August 16, 2021, Galaxy Resources Limited (ASX: GXY) and Orocobre merged to create among the world’s leading lithium companies.
