• Shares of metals and mining giant Rio Tinto hit a record high after the company reported strong earnings and announced AU$9.1 billion in dividends.

• Shares of Australian Pharmaceutical Industries rose 0.7 per cent to AU$1.42 after it rejected a takeover bid from Wesfarmers calling it “opportunistic”.

• Shares of software firm Iress was among the top gainers on the ASX pack after it rejected a takeover bid from investment firm EQT Fund Management.
