• The Dow and S&P 500 fell earlier in the day in on the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits. The dollar also rose after it had slid earlier in the trading session. 

• It showed the unemployment benefits claims rose by 51,000 to 419,000 in the week ended July 17, the highest jump since May. The figures exceeded the economists' expectations of 350,000. 

• Gold futures were up 0.21 per cent. Silver increased 0.94 per cent, while copper rose 1.56 per cent. 

• Brent oil increased 0.04 per cent and WTI crude was up 2.02 per cent.
