Why did Moderna recall thousands of doses?

Recently, Moderna announced that it has recalled more than 700000 doses of its Covid-19 vaccine produced by its contract manufacturer Rovi. The company reported that a foreign substance was found in one of the vials made. Practicing extra cautiousness, it has called back the entire lot.

In January 2022, the lot in discussion was distributed across Europe, in Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Spain, and Poland. The exact substance found in the vial is not yet disclosed; however, the company officials have said that no safety issues have been identified until now; and the entire lot is recalled serving extra cautiousness.

The news about the contamination of the vial came to the surface from one of the vaccination centres in Spain, and the vial has been sent for further forensic assessment and investigation. The company is also running a safety check on its global database to see if any safety issues have arisen. But, till now, no such news has been uncovered.

A similar issue happened in Japan last year

Last year, in August, Moderna notified that the company received several complaints from Japan about contamination in its vaccine vials. According to Moderna's reports, all the complaints were from a particular lot.

Eventually, it was disclosed that stainless steel was found in those vials. Moderna announced that this blunder was “human error”.

However, it is not just Moderna that has recalled its vaccine lot because of foreign elements present in the vials. Several other pharmaceuticals have recalled their lots as well. Vaccine production amid the pandemic is one of the most crucial tasks any economy is undertaking; thus, utmost cautiousness is needed on the part of manufacturers, distributors, and the authorities so that no contaminated vaccine dose reaches the world's citizens.
